Marilen Espinoza

Marilen Espinoza is a member of ESR’s Environment and Health Group in the ESR-managed National Centre for Radiation Science (NCRS) that operates under a contract with the Ministry of Health.

Marilen has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with Honors from the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines and a Master’s of Science from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Marilen spends much of her time in the field, working with dentists, radiologists and other medical specialists, as well as those in other industries (such as food processing) where radiation is regularly used. “Checking the radiation safety plan and working with clients to ensure they are using equipment safely is a big part of my day-to-day work,” Marilen says. “I also organise ESR’s general and tailored radiation safety training around the country.” Marilen worked as a senior laboratory technician at ESR before joining the Radiation Science Group in 2013. “It’s a new role that was created to give better geographic coverage for the team,” Marilen says. “While most of my team members are based out of Canterbury (there are also other two staff in Auckland), I am based in Wellington.” Prior to joining ESR, Marilen worked as a lab technician at R J Hill Laboratories in Hamilton. “My technical background and experience with both inspections and auditing have helped in this role,” she says.
