Regional councils in the New Zealand have little information on where the majority of the non-consented on-site wastewater systems (i.e., septic tanks) are located and if they pose a risk to drinking water supplies.
To bridge this information gap, we utilised geospatial datasets from Environment Canterbury to help identify the unknown on-site wastewater systems locations for 10 districts in Canterbury.
The findings of the project enable a comprehensive understanding of the spatial distribution of on-site wastewater systems, supports informed decision-making and sustainable wastewater management practices in Canterbury.
