A creative new initiative is breathing fresh life into surplus lab coats, promoting sustainability and reducing costs across Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) science facilities.
Instead of spending money on new coloured lab coats for two containment areas (the different colours are to prevent cross contamination through accidental sharing), staff at the Kenepuru and Wallaceville science centres explored more sustainable options. With dyeing ruled out, they opted for a simple yet effective solution—embroidered coloured patches stitched onto 22 existing lab coats. These refurbished garments will soon be reintroduced with their updated look.
In addition to cost savings and waste reduction, the team also prioritised community outreach. Forty-three surplus lab coats, with branding removed, have been donated to a nearby school, Te Kura Māori o Porirua, where staff were excited to receive them. Coats have been sent to another science centre for use in public health work.
The project reflects a broader commitment to sustainable practices and creative problem-solving across the organisation.
