To support the roll out of rapid diagnostic testing using CRISPR-Cas and related technologies, ESR data scientists looked at steps of the testing process where artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms could help prepare samples and analyse test results.
They built a mobile web-app powered by machine learning which analyses images from the device’s camera and detects a colour change reaction of samples in a microfuge tube.
The work promises to shift the diagnosis of diseases from the laboratory or hospital to on-site testing in communities. Doing so promises to remove barriers to healthcare, reduce costs and significantly increase the speed of testing – getting a result in a matter of minutes rather than a matter of days.
