The Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Ashley Bloomfield as Chief Executive through to the end of 2026.

Dr Bloomfield has served as Interim Chief Executive since August 2024, during a pivotal time of change for ESR and the broader science sector in New Zealand.

With the Government now outlining its vision for the future of New Zealand’s science system, including the transition of ESR into a Public Research Organisation, Dr Bloomfield’s continued leadership will ensure valuable continuity through this important transformation.

“We are delighted to confirm Ashley’s appointment,” said the ESR Board Chair Professor Sarah Young. “His leadership, deep understanding of public health, and strong connections across academia and government position ESR well for the future.”

In accepting the position, Dr Bloomfield expressed his enthusiasm for continuing to work with ESR staff and partners. “It’s a privilege to lead an organisation making such a tangible difference to the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders,” he said.

Dr Bloomfield was New Zealand’s Director-General of Health from June 2018 to July 2022 and led the country’s health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) in the 2023 New Year's Honours for services to public health and is now a Professor at the University of Auckland’s School of Population Health.

Dr Bloomfield will continue to serve full-time as Chief Executive while maintaining his academic position at the University of Auckland. His dual roles bring significant value to ESR, enabling strong linkages with research, advisory bodies and health networks.
