A 'digital twin' is a virtual replica of a physical asset or system that uses data and advanced analytics to simulate its behaviour and predict future outcomes. Digital twins have the potential to disrupt various industries, from manufacturing to healthcare and smart cities, by enabling remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, and data-driven decision-making.

They can improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance customer experience by providing insights into performance and opportunities for optimisation.

ESR's digital twin project aims to develop a platform that leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide an interactive and exploratory tool for data-driven decision-making across ESR’s various scientific domains, including climate change, pathogen outbreaks, drug surveillance and social sciences.
