Survey report on heavy metals in Ayurvedic medicines available in New Zealand
Summary
A significant increase in elevated blood lead levels from people exposed to Ayurvedic medicine containing high levels of lead and other heavy metals has been observed in New Zealand, beginning at the end of 2023. In response, it was decided to investigate contents of off the shelve Ayurvedic medicines available in New Zealand. Ayurvedic medicines are a subgroup of herbal medicines originating from the Indian subcontinent, where they are viewed as a legitimate alternative to conventional medicines. A survey funded by Health New Zealand was conducted to determine the prevalence and concentrations of detectable arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury in ayurvedic medicines. Samples were purchased from stores in Auckland and Christchurch and online stores based in New Zealand.
