Annual

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 1015 non-human Salmonella isolates in 2021 compared with 833 in 2020. 

There was a decrease in the number of:

  • S. Bovismorbificans (247 in 2020 vs. 127 in 2021)

There was an increase in the number of:

  • S. Enteritidis (5 in 2020 vs. 192 in 2021);
  • S. Give (78 in 2020 vs. 88 in 2021);
  • S. Hindmarsh (8 in 2020 vs. 23 in 2021);
  • S. Infantis (3 in 2020 vs. 17 in 2021);
  • S. Mbandaka (7 in 2020 vs. 39 in 2021);
  • S. Thompson (1 in 2020 vs. 46 in 2021)

An outbreak of S. Enteritidis in poultry flocks, and MPI investigation followed by extra testing associated with the MPI Emergency Control Scheme – Managing Salmonella Enteritidis in Commercial Chicken Flocks that came into effect 6th October 2021 has resulted in an increase in poultry isolate referrals.

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 41 non-human Salmonella isolates in March 2021.

April

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 66 non-human Salmonella isolates in April 2021.

May

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 68 non-human Salmonella isolates in May 2021.

June

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 72 non-human Salmonella isolates in June 2021.

July

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 105 non-human Salmonella isolates in July 2021 compared with 83 in July 2020.

There was a decrease in the number of S. Typhimurium isolates (38 in 2021 vs 44 in 2020).

There was an increase in the number of S. Bovismorbificans isolates (8 in 2020 vs 11 in 2021), S. Brandenburg isolates (11 in 2020 vs 16 in 2021), S. Mbandaka isolates (1 in 2020 vs 12 in 2021) and S. Thompson isolates (0 in 2020 vs 10 in 2021).

There has been an increase in poultry isolates due to surveillance associated with an outbreak of S. Enteritidis ST11 2019_C_01 in poultry flocks, and MPI investigation.

August

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 205 non-human Salmonella isolates in August 2021 compared with 184 in August 2020.

There was a decrease in the number of S. Bovismorbificans isolates (25 in 2021 vs 56 in 2020) and S. Typhimurium isolates (59 in 2021 vs 75 in 2020).

There was an increase S. Brandenburg isolates (31 in 2021 vs 27 in 2020), S. Thompson isolates (33 in 2021 vs 0 in 2020) and S. Infantis isolates (10 in 2021 vs 0 in 2020).

There has been an increase in poultry isolates due to surveillance associated with an outbreak of S. Enteritidis ST11 2019_C_01 in poultry flocks, and MPI investigation.

September

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 133 non-human Salmonella isolates in September 2021 compared with 204 in September 2020.

There was a decrease in the number of Salmonella Bovismorbificans isolates (82 in 2020 versus 30 in 2021) and Salmonella Give isolates (14 in 2020 versus 7 in 2021).

October

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 145 non-human Salmonella isolates in October 2021 compared with 82 October 2020.
There was a decrease in the number of Bovine isolates (69 in 2020 versus 55 in 2021)
There was an increase in the number of Poultry isolates (1 in 2020 versus 79 in 2021)
Extra testing associated with the MPI Emergency Control Scheme – Managing Salmonella Enteritidis in Commercial Chicken Flocks that came into effect 6th October 2021 has resulted in an increase in poultry isolate referrals.

November

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 76 non-human Salmonella isolates in November 2021 compared with 42 November 2020.

There was a decrease in the number of Bovine isolates (31 in 2020 versus 20 in 2021)
There was an increase in the number of Poultry isolates (4 in 2020 versus 34 in 2021)
Extra testing associated with the MPI Emergency Control Scheme – Managing Salmonella Enteritidis in Commercial Chicken Flocks that came into effect 6th October 2021 has resulted in an increase in poultry isolate referrals.

December

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 55 non-human Salmonella isolates in December 2021 compared with 20 December 2020.
