Annual summary 2020

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 833 non-human Salmonella isolates in 2020 compared with 926 in 2019.
There was a decrease in the number of:

  • S. Bovismorbificans (309 in 2019 vs. 247 in 2020);
  • S. Brandenburg (133 in 2019 vs. 91 in 2020);
  • S. Hindmarsh (28 in 2019 vs. 8 in 2020);
  • S. Mbandaka (16 in 2019 vs. 7 in 2020);
  • S. Saintpaul (14 in 2019 vs. 8 in 2020);

 There was an increase in the number of:

  • S. Give (12 in 2019 vs. 78 in 2020);
  • S. Typhimurium (320 in 2019 vs. 336 in 2020);

No phage typing was undertaken in 2020. When requested Typhimurium and Enteritidis isolates were instead analysed using whole genome sequencing (WGS) and individual reports only showed the serotype and the Achtman 7-gene ST type – which does not discriminate to a fine level within a serotype. Subsequent to the introduction of WGS, Salmonella Subsp. (I) ser. 4,5,12 : i : - is being reported as monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium.
