Annual summary 2019

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 926 non-human Salmonella isolates in 2019 compared with 848 in 2018.

There was a decrease in the number of:

  • S. Agona isolates (18 in 2018 vs. 9 in 2019);
  • S. Ruiru isolates (16 in 2018 vs. 4 in 2019);
  • S. Stanley Meal isolates (14 in 2018 vs. 1 in 2019);
  • S. Typhimurium phage type 42 (18 in 2018 vs. 4 in 2019);
  • S. Typhimurium phage type 101 (62 in 2018 vs. 47 in 2019);

There was an increase in the number of:

  • S. Typhimurium phage type 108/170 (3 in 2018 vs. 26 in 2019);
  • S. Typhimurium phage type 23 (19 in 2018 vs. 27 in 2019);
  • S. Brandenburg isolates (106 in 2018 vs. 133 in 2019);

From 1st November 2019, all phage typing ceased. From this time, serotypes that were historically phage typed – Typhimurium and Enteritidis have all been fine typed using whole genome sequencing upon request.
