Invasive Group A Streptococcal Infections in Indigenous New Zealanders With Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract

Using hospital discharge and mortality data obtained from the New Zealand Ministry of Health, the following information was obtained about each patient hospitalized with iGAS infection in New Zealand between 2002 and 2012: ethnicity; length of hospital stay (days); all hospital discharge diagnoses, as coded by the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10); and 7- and 30-day mortality. Using the ICD-10 code E11 (type 2 diabetes mellitus [T2DM]), we identified all patients with a discharge diagnosis relating to T2DM. The characteristics of patients with and without T2DM were compared (Table 1). A P value of <.05 was considered significant, and all statistical analyses were performed using Stata software (version 14).
