Factors Affecting the Near-Infrared Photography of Bloodstains

Abstract

Near-infrared (NIR) photography can be used to detect bloodstains on dark fabrics that are otherwise difficult to view with the naked eye. This technique is often successful, but may fail to detect all bloodstains that are present on a surface. We identify the factors that determine the success of NIR photography, which include the type of fabric, the effect of dyes in the fabric, and the type of bloodstains that are deposited on the fabric.
