Annual

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 785 non-human Salmonella isolates in 2022 compared with 1015 in 2021.

There was a decrease in the number of:

  • S. Bovismorbificans (127 in 2021 vs. 100 in 2022)
  • S. Brandenburg (89 in 2021 vs. 23 in 2022);
  • S. Enteritidis (188 in 2021 vs. 101 in 2022);
  • S. Mbandaka (39 in 2021 vs. 19 in 2022)

There was an increase in the number of:

  • S. Agona (7 in 2021 vs. 30 in 2022);
  • S. Give (88 in 2021 vs. 102 in 2022);
  • S. Livingstone (1 in 2021 vs. 24 in 2022)
January

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 36 non-human Salmonella isolates in January 2022 compared with 24 January 2021.

There was an increase in the number of Poultry isolates (0 in 2021 versus 12 in 2022).

Extra testing associated with the MPI Emergency Control Scheme – Managing Salmonella Enteritidis in Commercial Chicken Flocks that came into effect 6th October 2021 has resulted in an increase in poultry isolate referrals.

February

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 55 non-human Salmonella isolates in February 2022 compared with 24 February 2021.

There was an increase in the number of Poultry isolates (3 in 2021 versus 26 in 2022).

Extra testing associated with the MPI Emergency Control Scheme – Managing Salmonella Enteritidis in Commercial Chicken Flocks that came into effect 6th October 2021 has resulted in an increase in poultry isolate referrals.

March

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 93 non-human Salmonella isolates in March 2022 compared with 41 March 2021.

There was an increase in the number of Poultry isolates (9 in 2021 versus 72 in 2022).

Extra testing associated with the MPI Emergency Control Scheme – Managing Salmonella Enteritidis in Commercial Chicken Flocks that came into effect 6th October 2021 has resulted in an increase in poultry isolate referrals.

In accordance with the Emergency Control Scheme for managing Salmonella Enteritidis in commercial chicken flocks, a number of isolates were received and stored without further typing. While they were received by ESR in March 2022 they were not all collected within this time frame, including 33 Salmonella Enteritidis isolates collected in 2021.

April

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 57 non-human Salmonella isolates in April 2022 compared with 66 April 2021.
There was a decrease in the number of S. Typhimurium isolates (27 in 2021 versus 16 in 2022)
There was an increase in the number of S. Bovismorbificans isolates (5 in 2021 versus 14 in 2022)
Extra testing associated with the MPI Emergency Control Scheme – Managing Salmonella Enteritidis in Commercial Chicken Flocks that came into effect 6th October 2021 has resulted in an increase in poultry isolate referrals.

May

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 72 non-human Salmonella isolates in May 2022 compared with 68 May 2021.
There was a decrease in the number of S. Enteritidis isolates (11 in 2021 versus 5 in 2022) and in the number of Bovine isolates (34 in 2021 versus 21 in 2022)
Extra testing associated with the MPI Emergency Control Scheme – Managing Salmonella Enteritidis in Commercial Chicken Flocks - that came into effect 6th October 2021 has resulted in an increase in poultry isolate referrals.

June

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 47 non-human Salmonella isolates in June 2022 compared with 72 June 2021.
There was a decrease in the number of S. Enteritidis isolates (20 in 2021 versus 1 in 2022) and in the number of Poultry isolates (38 in 2021 versus 15 in 2022)

July

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 58 non-human Salmonella isolates in July 2022 compared with 105 July 2021.
There was a decrease in the number of S. Typhimurium isolates (38 in 2021 vs 14 in 2022), S. Bovismorbificans isolates (11 in 2021 vs 8 in 2022), S. Brandenburg isolates (16 in 2021 vs 2 in 2022) and Poultry isolates (51 in 2021 vs 14 in 2022).

August

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 115 non-human Salmonella isolates in August 202 compared with 205 in August 2021.

There was a decrease in the number of S. Bovismorbificans isolates (25 in 2021 vs 8 in 2022), S. Brandenburg isolates (31 in 2021 vs 6 in 2022), S. Give isolates (16 in 2021 vs 10 in 2022), S. Infantis isolates (10 in 2021 vs 0 in 2022) and S. Thompson isolates (33 in 2021 vs 0 in 2022).

September

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 110 non-human Salmonella isolates in September 2022 compared with 133 September 2021.

There was a decrease in the number of Salmonella Bovismorbificans isolates (30 in 2021 vs. 19 in 2022) and Salmonella Brandenburg isolates (29 in 2021 versus 5 in 2022).

There was an increase in the number of Salmonella Give isolates (7 in 2021 vs. 19 in 2022)

October

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 72 non-human Salmonella isolates in October 2022 compared with 145 October 2021.

There was a decrease in the number of Bovine isolates (55 in 2021 versus 39 in 2022) and Poultry isolates (79 in 2021 versus 20 in 2022).

November

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 44 non-human Salmonella isolates in November 2022 compared with 76 November 2021.

There was a decrease in the number of Bovine isolates (20 in 2021 versus 9 in 2022) and Poultry isolates (36 in 2021 versus 7 in 2022).

There was an increase in the number of Canine isolates (9 in 2021 versus 12 in 2022).

December

The Enteric Reference Laboratory confirmed 26 non-human Salmonella isolates in December 2022 compared with 55 December 2021.

There was a decrease in the number of Poultry isolates (34 in 2021 versus 8 in 2022).
