Role within Māori Impact: Donna serves as the Mana Whenua Strategic Liaison within the Māori Impact team, playing a vital role in strengthening relationships between local iwi and ESR. As the whaea of the rōpū—she offers guidance and support while upholding the values of awhi and manaaki. Currently, she is focused on the New Build at Kenepuru, where she works to deepen the connection between ESR and Ngāti Toa Rangatira. Through this project, Donna aims to help ESR staff understand the spiritual and physical ties to the whenua, which will be reflected in the new building. Why is she passionate to work in this space: Donna is passionate about making a meaningful impact for Māori, both today and for future generations. Her work is driven by the belief that the mahi we do now shape a better tomorrow. Being part of the Māori Impact allows Donna to embrace her identity, care for others, and foster stronger relationships with mana whenua. She is committed to creating safer environments across Aotearoa and ensuring that the work reflects and respects mātauranga Māori. How her mahi contributes to the collective impact for Māori: With 24 years of experience at ESR, Donna has made significant contributions, starting in the Health & Environment laboratories and later working for 19 years in Specimen Reception, where she supported scientists by creating essential media. For the past five years, as a proud member of the Māori Impact Rōpū, Donna has focused on initiatives like the New Build at Kenepuru, aiming to enhance understanding of local iwi and contribute to lasting, positive change for the communities ESR serves. Through her work, Donna helps foster stronger relationships with mana whenua and supports ESR’s commitment to working in alignment with Māori values and perspectives.
