Heidi Baker

Heidi Baker is a senior scientist in ESR's Forensic Research and Development Team based in Christchurch.

Heidi earned her BSc (Hons) in Genetics from the University of York in the United Kingdom.

About

Heidi Baker joined ESR in 2007 as a Senior Scientist in the Forensic Group, having carried out a broad range of forensic services for almost 10 years at the Forensic Science Service in London. Heidi earned her BSc (Hons) in Genetics from the University of York in the United Kingdom. Initially based at the Mount Albert Science Centre in Auckland, Heidi had a stint with the Christchurch Forensic Service Centre and is now part of the Forensic Research and Development Team. Following 25+ years of forensic casework experience, Heidi supports forensic capability development for other Pacific Island countries; and also researches the intersects between forensics and Indigenous Peoples, how this impacts current and future forensic practices and approaches to research. Heidi is passionate about people and the planet, and is part of ESR’s sustainability committee which includes setting strategy, emissions targets and how to achieve them. Heidi sits on the Forensic Science Queensland Forensic Biology Advisory Sub-Committee, which was formed following the Commission of Inquiry into Forensic DNA Testing in Queensland in 2022 and saw Heidi provide technical expertise to the Commission.
