Science Leader - Health & Environment
Belinda Cridge is a toxicology expert and her primary focus is drinking water. She provides advice and expert support around drinking water in New Zealand (for example, evaluating the potential harm from nitrates). She also provides expertise on all areas of toxicology, which is about keeping people safe from chemicals that might be in their environment or food.
Belinda’s day-to-day work varies widely and includes in-depth research and literature reviews, advising health boards, and writing guidelines. She also works with organisations like Taumata Arowai to provide scientific expertise as needed.
A highlight of Belinda’s time at ESR was dealing with a lead contamination issue in the Waikouaiti drinking supply. It was the first time she’d been involved in this type of public health response and she found it really satisfying to see her science knowledge being used to help communities and keep people safe.
Before joining ESR Belinda was a toxicology lecturer at the University of Otago and has worked on projects including the poisoning of cattle in Southland and novel pest control agents. She’s also worked in science communication, run a museum and set up my own company.
Belinda is based in Rotorua and works remotely.
