An innovative project to develop the first portable, fluorescent paper-based test capable of detecting Fantasy-type drugs has been awarded funding as part of New Zealand’s largest contestable research fund.

An interdisciplinary project team from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) and Victoria University of Wellington were awarded $1 million from the ‘Smart Ideas’ 2024 Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Endeavour Fund round.

ESR Drug Chemist Olivia Johnson says, “There has been a dramatic increase in the amount of Fantasy-type substances in New Zealand over the past few years. Consuming these substances can slow reactions down, cause sleepiness, and impact memory. Fantasy-type substances may be used to spike drinks in association with an assault and you may be unable to tell that a drink has been tampered with.”

ESR Science Leader Dr Rachel Fleming, Principal Investigator for the project, explains the team will use an innovative technology to develop a quick, point-of-care ultrasensitive fluorescent paper-based test. ESR research scientist Dr Anindita Sen will be leading the development of the diagnostic test.

Crucially, the funding will support the team to work across sectors, including hospitality, community services, and border and law enforcement agencies to provide them with the tools they need to reduce the harm these drugs have on society.

Smart Ideas funding aims to allow scientists to test innovative projects with a high potential to benefit New Zealand. In all, 53 applications for Smart Ideas funding were approved in the 2024 round of the Endeavour Fund.
