Staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome is closely associated with strains of Staphylococcus aureus carrying the gene encoding for the toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1).
Isolates that are tested for the presence of the toxic shock syndrome toxin gene are also tested for the presence of the genes encoding for staphylococcal enterotoxins A-E(external link). Non-menstrual cases of toxic shock syndrome are more likely to be due to enterotoxin A to E producing strains of S. aureus than to those that produce TSST-1.
