The National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease significantly increases New Zealand's capability to safeguard human and animal health and to protect the economy. It provides a centralised coordination and emergency response centre for disease outbreaks, biosecurity investigations and chemical and biological threats and events.

SurvINZ is a technology platform that allows organisations that monitor diseases and pests to access secure web based real time information integrated from a number of different sources (questionnaires, field observations, laboratory tests, sampling). The platform is designed for surveillance applications that require multiple agencies to enter, access and share data.

 The WHO National Influenza Centre, New Zealand (PDF, 39KB)
New Zealand's National Influenza Centre (NIC) has been recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1954. It has a dual role as the national reference laboratory and in running New Zealand's national influenza surveillance. It provides the contact nationally and internationally for the virological and epidemiological surveillance of influenza. It also provides influenza virus isolates to the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network.

 EpiSurv - Notifiable disease surveillance database (PDF, 41KB)
Communicable diseases offer a significant risk to New Zealand's population. An effective national reporting system is essential to the prevention and control of communicable diseases. Notifiable disease surveillance activities in New Zealand are carried out by both local and national authorities. ESR operates the national notifiable disease surveillance database, EpiSurv, on behalf of the Ministry of Health.

Hair analysis for drugs of abuse is increasing. Using hair analysis, ESR can get a history of an individual’s drug use, with most drugs being detectable. As hair grows, the drugs are locked inside and are thought to be stable for a great many years, even post-mortem.
