Surveillance reports

Community and hospital surveillance reports for SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Infections) and ILI (Influenza-like Illness).

SARI surveillance was established and funded by the US CDC under award number 5U01IP000480 and continues to operate through funding from the New Zealand Ministry of Health. Reporting is weekly during the flu season and monthly outside of the flu season.

2016 winter surveillance at Auckland City, Starship, Middlemore and Kidz First hospitals commenced on 2 May 2016 and will include:

  • SARI screening
  • burden of influenza in infants (aged 1 year and under) who do not meet the SARI case definition
  • screening of infants presenting to the Emergency Department at Middlemore Hospital.

ILI surveillance in the community continues under the Ministry of Health funded national sentinel general practice programme.
