Science, Technology and Society (STS) research is an interdisciplinary field which studies the origins, dynamics and consequences of science and technology.
ESR STS staff work with with scientists, decision-makers and other stakeholders on matters of equity, politics, social policy and change.
How is STS practised in New Zealand?
STS research and teaching has been practised in New Zealand since the 1970’s. Much of the early STS activity was led by scientists concerned about the social responsibility of science. New Zealand social scientists, including those in the Integrative Research for Sustainability Group at ESR, are internationally recognised in the STS field.
