A number of small initiatives are currently underway bringing together Māori (research) perspectives and genetic research. Maui Hudson and Annabel Ahuriri-Driscoll are the convenors of He Ahunga Maurea, a working group of iwi/Māori charged with developing a policy for use of Māori genetic information within ESR. The Māori Development and Māori Researcher positions also have advisory-level involvement in the Rakaipaaka Health and Ancestry Study. Externally, ESR also contributes to the FRST-funded Constructive Conversations project (UOCX 0221), investigating the balancing of potential health benefits with cultural concerns and collective and individual decision-making processes regarding the use of Māori genetic material.
