Information on ESR's DNA software systems

The following systems not only support the quality and chain of custody requirements that are so critical to ESR's forensic laboratories, they also enable our laboratories to keep pace with changes in technology.

FaSTR - automated allele analysis

FaSTR automates the analysis of DNA profiles in forensic laboratories. Using sample files generated by ABI Genetic Analysers, FaSTR applies a set of rules and parameters that enable the time consuming process of allele calling to be dramatically improved.

Not only does FaSTR provide significant time savings, the software also ensures that the allele calling process is applied consistently and that the user organisation's quality assurance criteria are met.

FaSTR can detect and score rare alleles, split peaks, quenching, stutter, n-peaks, pull-up peaks, and also perform ladder calculations. Accept/reject criteria can be set for each locus. Default parameters can be set by the user and adjusted to suit varying quality requirements. Alternatively, the user can use the standard parameters preset for the combination of Instrument and Profile Type

Forensic Evidence DNA Database System (FEDDS)

In 1996 New Zealand was the second country in the world to deploy a national DNA database system. Extensive user experience has resulted in a leading-edge customisable DNA database system with integrated LIMS that can be adapted to the needs of any jurisdiction.

The modular design and advanced functionality contribute greatly to DNA laboratory operating efficiency. The system also incorporates bar-coding, robust chain of custody features that stand scrutiny in court, and many other features that address the special needs of forensic laboratories.

FEDDS has been proven in service and is an excellent tool capable of underpinning the justice systems in many countries. In New Zealand, the system has a 50% hit rate for "no suspect" crimes
