ESR's CBRE Science

ESR’s science underpins the New Zealand government’s preparedness and response capability to Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Explosive (CBRE) events as well as preserving evidence for the criminal justice system.

ESR is working with research partners and collaborators to further develop the capability to identify, characterise, respond to, and recover from these natural and deliberate CBRE events.

Natural threats include:
  • emerging infectious diseases such as: avian influenza, SARS, HIV, West Nile virus
  • pesticide/chemical spills and contaminated sites

Deliberate incidents in New Zealand include:
  • Claimed release of Foot & Mouth disease (Waiheke Island, 2005)
  • Unknown substance or 'white powder' incidents (2002 - current day)
  • Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (1997)
