National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease - Wallaceville (NCBID)

ESR, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), AgResearch and AsureQuality work in a collaborative effort to protect animal and human health from:

• existing and emerging disease outbreaks
• chemical and biological threats and events
• biosecurity threats.

The National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease - Wallaceville significantly increases New Zealand's capability to safeguard human and animal health and to protect the economy.  

ESR’s contributes capability, expertise and skills in the areas of: 

• Reference laboratory services (including PC3+ capability)
• Outbreak investigation capability
• Joint surveillance and investigation with the MAF Investigation and Diagnostic Centre
• Monitoring and reporting of emerging risks
• Training and skill development programmes for aberrant event investigations for the health sector
• Risk assessment
• CBRE science (identifying and investigating biological and chemical threats and microbial forensics)
• Investigating infectious disease threats, disease surveillance modelling and forecasting

ESR NCBID-Wallaceville has staff with expertise in the following areas:

• Microbiology of viral and bacterial zoonotic and vector-borne pathogens
• Molecular biology
• Methods and technologies for detection, identification and characterisation of pathogens
• Infectious disease and field epidemiology
• Biology/ecology
• Public health medicine
• Risk assessment
• Infectious disease management.
