ESR is building a greater understanding of the interdependence of people and their physical and social environment. This understanding is especially enhanced by our growing relationship with Māori hapu and iwi. ESR has established meaningful relationships with the three iwi associated with each of its sites - Ngati Whatua, Ngati Toa and Ngai Tahu.
Increasingly, ESR and Māori communities recognise our common interests and goals. We share concerns for the safety of kaimoana and Māori traditional foods, the quality of water supplies, and the need to reduce communicable diseases, particularly among our children.
ESR continues to foster interactive partnerships with iwi, schools and community groups. In partnership with local iwi, ESR is providing support for iwi initiatives such as marae-based homework centres.
Partners Porirua
The Partners Porirua Programme is a local initiative aimed at fostering relationships between schools and local businesses. ESR is involved in a 'hands on' environmental science programme in collaboration with Titahi Bay Intermediate.
The programme is in its fifth year now and is helping to ignite a passion for science in the children. "The student's love it - and the work produced is outstanding!" says the Principal of Titahi Bay Intermediate. The project culminates in a presentation by the children at ESR.
